Dragon*Con, and a new UK con

Hi everyone!

I'm Ludi - brand new here, and I'll be coming to Dragon*Con this weekend. I wanted to ask - in the light of the D*C organisers failing spectacularly on engaging with the Back Up Project, what happens now? Will there still be a table there, will distributing the ribbons be more informal, or will ribbons not be distributed at all?

I'd also very much like to meet anyone who has been involved with Back Up at D*C and have a chat about it, cause I've just been drafted in to help run a new sci-fi con in the UK (it's called Nine Worlds, we're just starting out.) I'd like to make it as safe a space as possible right from the beginning, and am currently researching ways to do that - one of which would be having a strong Back Up Project presence there. So, this post is me asking for any advice or experiences or thoughts on that you'd like to share (I've also been reading the archives here extensively) as well as a super-preliminary bit of - if anyone's in the UK and feels like being involved, let me know?

Thanks so much! I'm really happy that this project and community exists : )

My primary piece of advice would be to write and heavily publicize a clear, strong, anti-harassment policy, and train your safety personnel on appropriate responses to reports of harassment.

Somewhere (possibly in the archives of this group?) was someone talking about how one surprisingly effective tactic was to call your con security "safety" instead of "security" -- at least in part because "safety" attracts a psychologically different set of people. (Anyone know what link I am thinking of? Out of brain.)

(edited because I can't SPELL argggh)

I like that idea a lot, thanks so much! Yeah - we'll definitely be selecting our safety people carefully, I've heard a bit about some con-goers getting trouble from the security staff themselves, and a few queer events here in the UK have had problems with their security people too - and we're an all-queer group of organisers, so...

There will not be a table nor any set distribution point at the con. We had put this out there to the Dragon*con concom in an effort to come to some sort of compromise. Which, as you know, didn't work.

However, some ribbons did somehow manage to make it to people who will just happen to be at a big science fiction convention that weekend in Atlanta. Perhaps if you ask them?

Also, in regard to your PM, if you want that large a number of ribbons, it would be much more cost-effective for you to have them made up locally (I use a local trophy shop). Having us ship them to you from the US would just add to your cost, as that would be more than we could readily absorb.

What we CAN do is send you a sample pack of 10 so that you can see what they look like -- and you'll have something to show around to possible vendors so they know what you want. PM me your mailing addy and we will get those out, along with some cards.

I will be there, and I have.... small cloth items of interest. I am of course leery to hand out my phone number on open forum. Do you have twitter? I do a lot of Dragoncon coordinating via twitter. It's practically all I use it for in fact. LOL. If not I could give my phone number via pm, or if you don't have an American phone line to use, I also receive emails on my phone.

I love how our ribbons are suddenly contraband.

I'll be interested to see if they actually do start confiscating. I've got even money on that.
