In case it got missed, y'all should be aware of this incident and the fallout thereof. (links not safe for work and may be triggery).
First -- mad mad props to WinCon for doing the RIGHT thing. I only wish more ConComs would man up and do this.
Second -- in light of this, and as I have ended up as That Person who has stepped in, I think perhaps we need a way to identify ourselves as being people who other fans can go to either because somebody has made them feel uncomfortable or who are willing to step in for sitatuations where con security might not be readily handy.
Since it is a given that Fans Love Ribbons, this may be the easiest way for us to identify ourselves. A ribbon with "I Gotcher Back." Or something similar. Along with some way to publicize what that means.
In my perfect little fantasy world, ribbons could be shipped to a point person for a given con, to be distributed there to those willing to take on the task.
I am still bouncing this around inside my head.
[ETA: I have placed an order for 300 Back Up! ribbons. Purple Block lettering (easy to spot from a distance) on white. I'm hoping to have them in a few weeks. So once I get, I will announce here. Essentially, you can tell me where and how many to ship, and by when and I will do the rest. If you want to pay for postage, that's swell, but not necessary. This is MY idea and I'm more than happy to do this out of my own pocket.]
As an aside, if anybody wants relatively recent pics of the couple involved in the WinCon incident, I can link you to some. In case they try this stunt again at another con (and as a heads up, they are apparently planning to be at Dragon*Con this year).

i'll be at wiscon with a few black "backup" ribbons that i got from hodges in 2008, and am willing to hand them out to people. i unfortunately didn't feel like i had enough money to get another order this year.
however!
i just checked my email, and i got 100 ribbons for $25, which is a totally reasonable price. the ones i got were horizontal black satin with silver text.

The question is, how can we network this so that, for example, you'd be the point person for ribbons at Wiscon (since I don't go to that con). And somebody else can be the distributor at, say, MiniCon.
Should we have people sign up for cons they attend?
I'm ALL over LosCon, Gallifrey One and BayCon, for example. And I Know People at Dragon*Con, so I can do some of that, but that's such a flippin' HUGE con, it needs a bunch of people willing to distribute ribbons.
Hell, I'm even willing to place a huge-ass order and ship 'em out to folk to distribute, if we want.

i think this would be a good idea, but am hesitant to say "hey! i'm broke! you should go spend some money on this!"

I've been fighting a battle with LosCon for YEARS over a guy who was notorious for hitting on women. It took four of us regular female guests combined to get him blacklisted as a guest, so he just came back as an attendee. He finally got booted after he hit on an underage girl wearing a Jailbait ribbon within earshot of her friend and her mom (!!!). Fortunately, he finally moved out of the area.
And this whole WinCon business was really just the final straw.
So this is MY contribution, really. :>

I also have the estimable roomie, who is a nurse practictioner, quite imposing with her nurse face and teacher voice, and has had a LOT of training and experience dealing with the after-effects of all sorts of Bad Stuff. So I think she'd back me up on backing others up, quite well.

Random query, as I've been offline writing a few novels in the last 6 months and am out of the loop: has Back Up Project been approached by any cons with offers of shared resources, table space, awareness training, panel participation, etc?

I just joined, so I dunno about any official con participation

I'd also like the link (Gmail: sneezythesquid@), so I know who to watch out for.

I will also be at Dragon*Con with the 76th Battalion, so you better believe they will ALL be gettin' ribbons!
